VIDEO: South Yorkshire folk have weekend of fun in the snow
December 29, 2014 (11:20) [ Indexed from The Star ]
It may have been too late for a White Christmas – but the blanket of snow which covered the region was here in time for a white weekend of fun.Families from all over South Yorkshire wrapped up in their winter woollies and headed out for fun and games in the white stuff after it covered South Yorkshire on Boxing Day evening.Children sledged down any slopes they could find while others bravely battled in snowball fights or made festive snow angels and snowmen.Readers on The Star’s Facebook page sent in their own snaps of snowy scenes and children having fun.Temperatures were set to drop again last night and today forecasters predicted another chilly day, with the mercury remaining as low as -2C. Meanwhile, Sheffielders stuck in gridlocked traffic on Boxing Day evening have continued their calls for an improvement to the city’s gritting situation. Many angry readers contacted The Star with concerns over an apparent lack of salt on the roads and empty grit bins. But a spokesman for Amey, the council contractor in charge of gritting, insisted its teams had been out ‘around the clock.’
The spokesman said: “The Streets Ahead team completed a full grit run before the snow and we have manned 19 gritters around the clock since then, laying over 700 tonnes of grit to keep Sheffield moving. “All priority one routes were passable by 5am on Saturday morning and we continued to work on the priority two roads all day.”n More in People pullout More...
