Ricky Hatton has high hopes for WBA challenger Martin Murray
December 01, 2011 (17:20) [ Indexed from Mirror.co.uk
Promoter Ricky Hatton believes Martin Murray can become his first world champion when the unbeaten St Helens fighter challenges Felix Sturm for the WBA middleweight title tomorrow night. Murray, 29, takes on German superstar Sturm in Mannheim rated as the rank outsider. He will aim to go one better than domestic rival Matthew Macklin managed in June, when the Birmingham boxer looked to have beaten Sturm over 12 rounds only to lose a controversial decision. And Hatton, whose promotional venture continues to grow at an impressive rate, believes Murray can provide a landmark victory. The popular former two-weight world champion said: "I feel Martin Murray can become my first world champion. "Apart from his obvious talent he's in his prime, hungry, fresh with very few miles on the clock. This is the right fight at the right time." Sturm (36-2-1, 15KO wins) represents a daunting challenge on home turf, particularly against a fighter as inexperienced as Murray (23-0, 10KOs). But the British and Commonwealth champion - who only won the domestic belt in his last fight - believes he can exploit holes in Sturm's armour. "I watched Sturm's defence against Macklin and made it a draw," he said. "When it is that close the champion on home soil usually gets the decision and there could be no real complaints." More...

Hatton nervous ahead of cornerman debut
November 02, 2011 (13:05) [ Indexed from Mirror.co.uk
Ricky Hatton admits he will be nervous as he was before any of his fights when he makes his ring return next week. The former two-weight world champion starts his new career as a trainer at Oldham Leisure Centre on November 12. The Hitman will be in the corner of Blackpool's Adam Little when he boxes a four-round welterweight contest on the undercard of Denton Vassell's Commonwealth welterweight defence against Samuel Colombian. Hatton said: "I'll be nervous and anxious when Adam has his first contest with me in his corner because all eyes will be on me. "Just because I have been a good boxer doesn't mean I'm going to be a good coach. Some of the best trainers in the world weren't great boxers. "Just like I was when I was a fighter I will love the challenge. "I'm confident in my own ability and have a lot to offer my fighter. I'll be throwing every punch with Adam because he has put his faith in me. "I don't want to be in the corner of any fighters where they think I am there for a pay cheque." More...
